SUMMER’S SUPER SALE

Billings Livestock’s “Mid-Summer Special Catalog Sale” July 23 offered 450 head of horses with a fancy blue roan daughter of Bet Hesa Cat topping the day’s market.

Bred for 2023 to the $53 million dollar sire Metallic Cat, Hip 85 “Ima Little Bitt Cat” a 2018 AQHA blue roan mare offered by Jim Marziale, Ogden, UT brought $30,000.

Top selling gelding Hip 58 “Z Wyoming Chrome” a 2015 AQHA Sorrel Gelding offered by Josh Thornburg, Riverton, WY came ranch ridden in big country, gentle, and started roping in the arena.

One of the good ones, the special gelding brought $27,500 and sold to S. Proffitt, Kings Mountain, NC.

Yellowstone River Performance Horses, Richard Johnson, Laurel, MT offered a nice set of geldings including Hip 144 “Valiente Whiz” a 2018 AQHA Sorrel Gelding x Star Spangled Whiz and out of a Gallo Del Cielo daughter that brought $25,000.

Rope horses shine – every time – at Billings and Hip 53 “Fancy Silver Stripes” a 2014 AQHA Gray Gelding x Fancy Stripes x Sun Stripes and out of a Roan Bar Dandy bred mare consigned by Chelsey Harding, McHenry, ND was a started head horse as well as a been there, done that ranch horse.

The thick made, big boned, handsome man brought $23,200.

The top five sellers – four geldings and a mare – averaged $25,840, the top ten at $21,740; top 20 brought $17,120; top 50 at $11,742; and the top 100 averaged $8,478.

With volume comes selection and Billings offers a horse for every budget as 44 head of catalog horses brought between $4,500 and $6,000.

Again and again, the BLS loose trade sets the pace for the nation as 253 head of horses were offered in the loose division which saw a $6,900 high followed by $6,200, and $6,100.

Driven by the prospects and presented to a full arena of buyers, 86 head brought $2,000 or better with 50 over the $3,000 mark, and 28 at $4,000 plus.

Loose averages incude the top five at $6,120, top ten at $5,560, top 20 brought $5,050, top 50 at $4,184 and the top 100 averaged $3,194.
